The electrifying ZCC SIXERS 2025 cricket tournament, organized by the Zahira College Colombo Old Boys Association (OBA) UAE, concluded in spectacular fashion at the Skyline University College Grounds in Sharjah.
With ten creatively named teams inspired by IPL franchises and reimagined with local flavor, the event offered thrilling cricketing action, camaraderie, and community spirit — a true festival for cricket lovers and Zahirians alike.
Over 250 old boys of Zahira College Colombo, along with their families and friends, gathered for this high-energy six-a-side tournament that featured 5-over matches, nail-biting finishes, and plenty of entertainment throughout the day. The competition was fierce from the very first delivery. After an intense round of group-stage and knockout matches, the Cup Final saw a high-octane clash between Royal Challengers Bambalapitiya (RCB) and Maradana Islanders (MI). RCB emerged as the undisputed Cup Champions, showcasing stellar batting and fielding prowess. In the Bowl Finals, Dematagoda Capitals (DC) triumphed over Grandpass Titans (GT) in a well-fought contest, earning the title of Bowl Champions. Meanwhile, the Plate Final witnessed Colpetty Super Kings (CSK) overcoming Kolonnawa Knight Riders (KKR) to take home the Plate Championship.
A special highlight of the tournament was the introduction of the Azmy Anwer Trophy, awarded to the Player of the Tournament. Named in honor of the late Azmy Anwer — a beloved former member of the ZCC OBA UAE and an all-round sportsman who proudly represented the association for many years — the award carries deep sentimental value within the Zahira community.

The inaugural recipient of this prestigious accolade was Fasmir Zakariya from Royal Challengers Bambalapitiya (RCB), whose all-round brilliance lit up the tournament. Fasmir not only claimed the Purple Cap for taking the highest number of wickets but also finished as the second highest run-scorer, playing a pivotal role in RCB’s Cup Championship triumph. The Orange Cap, awarded to the tournament’s top run-getter, was claimed by Zia Ul Haq of Kolonnawa Knight Riders (KKR), whose batting consistency and flair made him a standout performer.
A standout feature of this year’s tournament was the highly anticipated player auction held on the 6th of April. Captains took their picks in a live bidding format, adding strategic depth and excitement to the team formations. The auction not only built pre-tournament hype but also fostered teamwork and anticipation well before the first ball was bowled.
The vibrant day-long event wasn’t just about cricket; it was about rekindling old friendships and building new ones. Families came out in large numbers, with food stalls, music, and children’s activities turning the venue into a carnival ground. The electrifying atmosphere was a testament to the power of sport in bringing people together across generations and geographies. The event even gained traction beyond the UAE, with Sri Lankan cricketer Sadeera Samarawickrama extending his wishes to the participants — a proud moment for the organizers and attendees alike.
Much of the event’s success was made possible by the incredible support from its sponsors. Siraj Finance PJSC led the way as the main sponsor, backing the vision of uniting Zahirians through sport. Thambapanni Restaurant, Al Nahda Sharjah, delighted attendees as the official catering partner, serving up a delicious selection of Sri Lankan favorites. CPM Fitouts stepped in as the official fitout partner, helping bring the venue to life, while AGT and Nanotek Printing supported the event as official trading and printing partners respectively. Their contributions played a vital role in delivering a professional, polished, and enjoyable event.
Reflecting on the success of ZCC SIXERS 2025, Imran Marso, President of ZCC OBA UAE, shared his thoughts:
“The event was a raging success and I’m extremely proud of the team for pulling this off — from organising the auction, managing the sponsors, and bringing together hundreds of past Zahirians in the UAE. It was more than just a cricket tournament — it was a celebration of unity, nostalgia, and shared passion.”
ZCC SIXERS 2025 has set a new benchmark for community cricket events in the UAE, blending competitive sport with festive spirit. With memories made, trophies lifted, and bonds strengthened, the event will be fondly remembered — until the next innings begins.
