The 6th Zahira rugby sevens tournament will take place on the 3rd of March at the Zahira College grounds in Maradana.
Science College dominated last year’s tournament and beat Vidyartha College Kandy 47-28 in the Cup final of Zahira Rugby Sevens to win the championship. Attractive prizes await the winners, in addition to the trophies and medals this year.
The cup, plate and bowl cash prizes await the winners/runners up of the cup and the plate. The cup winners will receive a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 and the runners up will get Rs. 25,000 while the plate winners will get Rs. 15,000 and the runners up Rs. 10,000. The Man of the Tournament will be awarded a trophy as well.
This tournament will be supported by Nizam Lantra, President of the ground of 60, Tony Amit (Tournament Director), T.M.I. Hamid (Technical Director) and Muhuseen Ariff (Tournament Coordinator). A team from Malaysia is also expected to take part in the competition and they will play in group ‘A’ alongside defending champs Science College and Nalanda College.
Under20 All Island champions St. Peters College will not take part in the tournament, together with Royal, St. Anthony’s, Wesley, Trinity, Kingswood and St. Josephs from the ‘A’ division. Last year’s runner’s up Vidyartha College will have Carey College and POW in their group while Isipathana, Ananda and S. Thomas’ have been slotted in to group C. The group ‘B’ comprises of Dharmaraja, hosts’ Zahira and Mahanama.
