Sri Lankan sprint king Yupun Abeykoon continued to blaze through the 2022 season, clocking in at 10.04s (+2.3m/s) in the 1st heat of the Men’s 100m at the Savona International Meet 2022, a World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger competition in Italy.
Abeykoon broke his own mark of 10.09s set last year to register the fastest 100m sprint ever by a Sri Lankan – both do not count as records due to wind assistance being measured above the legal 2.0 m/s.
Abeykoon finished 2nd behind Olympic Champion Marcell Jacobs of Italy, who snuck below the 10 second mark with a time of 9.99 in the heats.
The Sri Lankan sprinter could not replicate the same form in the final however, coming in 4th with a time of 10.16s, perilously close to breaking the National Record (which he holds) at 10.15s.
Marcell took home the Gold (10.04s), while the Ivory Coast’s Arthur Cisse (10.10s) and Frenchman Jimmy Vicaut (10.12s) grabbed Silver and Bronze respectively.
