The Youth Olympic Games which were to be held in 2022, have been postponed to the year 2026.
The Games were scheduled to be held in Dakar, Senegal in 2022, but with COVID 19 still rampant around the world, the organizing body has decided to skip the 2022 edition of the games.
With the Tokyo Olympic games that were scheduled to be held this year, being postponed to 2021, the IOC has really been struggling to plan out all their activities since everything was strongly affected by the ongoing pandemic.
Therefore, the Senegalese President Macky Sal made a proposal to the IOC president, Thomas Bach that the Dakar, Youth Olympic games 2022 be postponed to 2026.
Mr. Bach confirmed the decision to postpone the Youth Olympics from 2022 to 2026 at a press conference after a meeting with the IOC Executive Board on Wednesday the 15th of July.
He said that the decision was made considering the current situation of the world. And at the same time it will allow the International Olympic committee, National Olympic committees and the international federations to be able to plan out their activities better as well as for Senegal to continue to excellently prepare for the games in 2026.
“This amicable agreement illustrates the mutual trust between Senegal and the IOC. I would like to express my sincere thanks to President Macky Sall, a great friend and supporter of the Olympic movement, for this exceptional relationship of trust and quality. For all these reasons, I am sure that, together, we will organise a fantastic Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026 for Senegal, the entire African continent and all the young athletes of the world,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.
“I would like to reiterate that the IOC has my full support for the organisation of the Youth Olympic Games, postponed to 2026. I take this opportunity to reaffirm my confidence in the Executive Board and welcome the commitment of its teams, working side by side with us, to make Dakar 2026, the first Olympic event in Africa, a successful and memorable occasion”, said President Macky Sall.
