Youth Boxers to face-off in the ring today

The Youth Men & Women Boxing Championships for the Gen. Jagath Jayasuirya Challenge trophy will start off today and go on until the 23rd of March 2015 to take place at the new Sports Ministry Gymnasium Colombo. 

Organized by the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka the Championships will be conducted according to the 2014 AIBA rules by the Boxing Referees & Judges Association of Sri Lanka which is also affiliated to the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka.

This Tournament is open to all male and female boxers who are 17 and 18 years of age. Any male boxer who has won any medal at any ABA School Boys, Junior Championship, Youth Championship, Junior Nationals or Schools Nationals, LV Jayaweera Meet, TB Jayah meet or Stubbs Shield championships are said to eligible to take part in 49Kg, 52Kg, 56Kg, 60Kg and 64 Kg weight categories (no fresher boxers will be allowed to take part in these weight categories) while any male boxer including fresher boxers can also take part in 69Kg, 75Kg, 81Kg, 91kg and 91+ Kg weight categories. Female boxers will be allowed to take part in this tournament, this is aimed at encouraging the participation of female boxers providing them the exposure in the long term.

Vidyartha College Kandy the last year’s champions are entering full team in this year too, with the intention to defend their title, while established boxing schools in the likes of, Vidyarathana University College Horana, Royal College and last year Junior National Champion St Syslverster’s College will fight for school boxing prized possession. Last year Women Team Champions Narandeniya National School will also field a strong team from women weight categories while last year Westgate Cup women boxing Champion Poramadulla Central will also look to be a hearty contender to last year women champion team.

The meet will also be intended at as a means of selection for Men’s for the Youth Commonwealth Games that will be held from 5th – 12th September 2015 in Samoa, while women boxers will be selected for the world Youth Women’s Youth Championship.
