Athapaththu, Samarawickrama fifties propel Sri Lanka to their maiden Asia Cup title

Sri Lanka crowned champions of the Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024 as they registered a comfortable win over India in the final played today (28th July) at Dambulla International Cricket Stadium.

Having won the toss, India opted to bat first and managed to put on a solid batting performance with a score of 165/6 on the board.

Opening batter Smriti Mandhana was the standout for India, marching on to her 26th fifty in T20Is. Richa Ghosh (30) and Jemimah Rodrigues (29) also chipped in with crucial cameos down the order. Off-spinner Kavisha Dilhari was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka, grabbing 2 wickets for 36 runs.

In reply, Sri Lanka lost their opening batter Vishmi Gunaratne for just 1 run in the second over of the innings. However, skipper Athapaththu and No. 3 batter Harshitha Samarawickrama revived the innings, adding 87 runs for the second wicket.

Samarawickrama and Kavisha Dilhari took control of the game, sharing an unbeaten 73-run stand to put the home side over the line. This was Sri Lanka’s highest successful run chase in Women’s T20Is.

Samarawickrama made an unbeaten 69 runs off 51 balls with 6 fours and 2 sixes, while Athapaththu contributed 61 runs off 43 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes.

Sri Lankan skipper Athapaththu won the Player of the Tournament award, while Samarawickrama won the Player of the Final award for her heroics with the bat in the summit clash.
