Women’s Division I –Armed Forces dominate once again

192

The second round of matches of the Women’s Division I Limited Overs Tournament were held today at three venues around the country.  The three teams from the armed forces, Navy SC, Air Force SC and Army SC dominated proceedings in their matches against Matara SC, Colts CC and Palink SC respectively.

Navy SC vs Matara SC

The star studded Navy line up bulldozed over the hapless Matara SC girls in their fixture at the Uyanwatta grounds. Having been put into bat by the opposition, Navy SC amassed a total of 340 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in their allotted 50 overs.  Prasadini Weerakkody, Sashikala Siriwardene and Lasanthi Madushani all took a liking to the Matara SC bowlers, scoring 82, 81 and 70 respectively.

In reply, Matara SC could only manage a paltry 82 for the loss of 8 wickets with Maduri Samuddika picking up 4 wickets for the Navy. They will take heart, however, from the fact that they were able to bat out the entire 50 overs.

The Scores

Navy SC 340/7 (50) Prasadini Weerakkody 82, Sashikala Siriwardena 81, Hasini Perera 35, Lasanthi Madushani 70, Apsara Baddage 2/57

Air Force SC vs Colts CC

Having come into the match with a win under their belts, the Colts CC team showed aggressive intent in choosing to bat first after having won the toss at the Rifle Green grounds. However, the toss was the only thing that went their way on this occasion, as they crashed to 79 all out, without even batting out the allotted overs.  Medium pacer Oshadie Ranasinghe ran through the Colts batting line up, picking up 5 key wickets.

Air Force SC coasted to victory in just 17.4 overs, guided by the efforts of Chathurani Gunawardena and Sanduni Abeywickrama.

The Scores

Colts CC 79 All Out (36.2) Achini Perera 24, Iresha Sandamali 24, Oshadi Ranasinghe 5/23

Air Force SC 80/3 (17.4) Chathurani Gunawardena 18, Saduni Abeywickrama 22*, Janakanthi Mala 2/21

Army SC vs Palink SC

Palink SC won the toss and decided to take first lease of the flat track at the Army Grounds in Panagoda. Having lost their first match of the tournament, the Army Women were in no mood for let offs and put the Palink women under pressure right from the get go. Palink struggled to get going and were only able to manage 96 runs in 47 overs. Suganthika Kumari and Sherina Ravikumar were the pick of the bowlers for Army SC, bagging 6 of the 10 available wickets.

The Army SC openers came out with the intention of finishing the match as soon as possible and succeeded in doing so, using up just 13.3 overs to chase down Palink’s score. Iresha Damayanthi top scored for the hosts with 33 unbeaten runs.
