Newstead Girls’ College and St. Peter’s College were crowned Overall Western Province Athletic Champions, as the 2019 edition of the meet drew to a close today, 12th July at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Newstead Girls’ College, Negombo ousted Holy Cross College, Gampaha for the Girls’ championship with an aggregate score of 125 at the end of the 3rd and final day. Holy Cross finished close behind with a final score of 120 points.

In the Boys’ category, it was another Joe-Pete clash for 1st place honors. Unlike at the 2019 Cricket Big matches, St. Peter’s College managed to surpass their rivals by a mammoth margin to clinch the Western Province Boys’ Championship for the year 2019.

W D Sisadu Nuvinda from Padukka Sri Jayaratne MMV walked away with this year’s Best Performer (Male) award, in the Long Jump event. His record breaking performance of 7.35m, secured him of this honour as well as a new meet record in the Long jump event.

As for the Best Performer in the Girls’ category, it was Sadeepa Henderson of Gateway College, Rajagiriya that caught the eye of the judges with her impeccable performance, also in the Long Jump event. She was able to seal the win by setting a new meet record at 5.84m, while clinching the Girls’ U18 Best performer title, to end the day.

With an unmatched score of 1059 points after three days, Colombo was crowned Zonal Champions of 2019. Negombo finished with a total of 553 points to come in at 2nd while Piliyandala finished the meet 3rd with 325 points in total.

Best Players of 2019

53 new meet records have been established this year, showcasing the elevated level of competition that was on display at this years’ provincial meet. Meanwhile, 3 Meet records were matched.

In the Peterites win, a good chunk of points was hailed from the team events; St. Peter’s College won the overall title for Boys team event with a total of 49 points. Overall Runners-up, Holy Cross College of Gampaha clinched the victory belt in the Women’s Team events with 27 points.
