Sri Lanka Men’s U19 Team registered a convincing 6-wicket win over the visiting West Indies U19 Team in the first Youth ODI played today (27th August) at Dambulla.

After winning the toss, West Indies U19 skipper Stephan Pascal opted to bat first and they managed to get off to a solid start thanks to their opening pair Adrian Weir and Pascal who put on a 58-run stand for the first wicket.

However, Sri Lanka managed to drag things back, dismissing 6 quick wickets for 38 runs and pushed the visitors onto back foot at 96/6.

The speedster Garuka Sanketh picked up 4 wickets out of the 6 dismissals creating misery on West Indies batting lineup.

Subsequently, the visitors managed to revive their innings thanks to a 74-run stand between Nathan Sealy and Tarrique Edward for the 7th wicket. West Indies tail-enders also contributed with useful knocks down the order as they posted 223 runs on the board.

Sanketh finished with brilliant figures of 5/48 while Dinura Kalupahana picked up 3 wickets for 45 runs for the hosts.

In reply, Sri Lanka got off to a shaky start as they lost their opening batting pair for just 11 runs in first 4 overs. However, Sri Lanka’s No. 3 batter Ravishan de Silva and No. 4 batter Supun Waduge revived the innings, adding a match winning partnership for the 3rd wicket.

The duo added 134 runs off 154 balls setting the tone for Sri Lanka’s victory. De Silva was the top scorer for the hosts with 65 runs off 85 balls including 7 fours and a six while Waduge chipped in with 56 runs off 78 balls with 8 fours.

Dinura Kalupahana provided the late impetus to the innings with a quick-fire half-century. He stroked 52 runs off 42 balls with 7 fours and a six, helping Sri Lanka U19s cruised to the target in the 44th over with 6 wickets in hand.

Sri Lanka U19 will take on the visiting West Indies U19 in the 2nd Youth ODI of the 3-match series on the 30th August at the same venue.
