Winning the toss and electing to field first on this occasion, the Windies made a good start to the game, breaking the opening partnership between Kusal Perera and Avishka Fernando when Oshane Thomas, Player of the Match from the last game, bowled the latter for 9.

Fabian Allen struck with consecutive deliveries to push Sri Lanka deeper into trouble with the wickets of Perera and Shehan Jayasuriya. Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis steadied the ship for Sri Lanka but momentum was lost and with wickets falling at regular intervals, it was left to Dasun Shanaka and Thisara Perera to provide the late fireworks. The pair produced 46 in 23 deliveries to take Sri Lanka across the 150-run mark.

156 was always going to be difficult to defend against the powerful West Indian batting order but Sri Lanka fielded brilliantly to keep themselves barely in the hunt. Lendl Simmons was dismissed early by Angelo Mathews but Brandon King and Shimron Hetmeyer and then Hetmeyer and Russell ensured that the visitors got home with 3 overs to spare.

Sri Lanka were dealt a couple of big blows in the early part of the Windies chase, with both Kusal Perera and Wanindu Hasaranga having to leave the field injured.

Russell seemed to be struggling with some pain in his right shoulder but that didn’t stop him from smashing 6 massive sixes on his way to 40 off 14 deliveries.
