Wesley College started their 2013 rugby season in style winning the Western Province rugby tournament beating Isipathana College 17 points to 10, on Sunday at the Science College grounds.
Wesley under the captaincy of half back Rahul De Silva managed to sweep through the entire tournament winning convincingly during the first few matches. Wesley in their first match managed to beat Royal College Panadura by 24 points to nil. The highest score for them came in their cup quarter finals against Dharmapala MMV as they smashed them 55-nil.
Wesley in their semi finals went up against S. Thomas’ and helped themselves to another convincing win beating them 33-0.
The cup runner up Isipathana College also had a good start to their sevens campaign beating Carey College 43-0. It was tough times for the Greens in the next game as they managed to win by a whisker pass Prince of Wales 12-5. The cup semi final was a better outing for the team from Havelock Park as they won against Science College 26 points to nil.
Science College and S. Thomas’ battled it out for the Plate title and the former managed to win the match convincingly scoring 27 points to nil. It was a clash of the Maroons in the Shield segment and Ananda managed to beat Nalanda in a close battle 5-0. C. W. W Kannangara was able to beat Lumbini in the Bowl finals 26-12.
Sri Lanka rugby football union secretary and Western Province rugby football union president, Rizly Illyaz was the chief guest for this event.
The All Island under 20 sevens tournament will be held on the 16th and 17th of February (Saturday/Sunday) at the Royal College sports complex.
