Vidyartha College destroyed Ananda College 48 (8T 4C) – 16 (2T 2P) to secure the William Gopallawa Shield in the game which concluded today (19th August), at the newly renovated Ananda College Rugby Complex in Rajagiriya.

Vidyartha entered as overwhelming favourites and it took them just minutes to open the scoring through Halfback Hettiarchchi. His converted try opened the scoring and the floodgates, which Ananda were unable to hold back.

Ananda struck back through a pair of penalties off the boot of Chamuditha Deneth. The 16-year old was the only player to get on the scoresheet for the hosts as Vidyartha ran riot.

Tries courtesy Yasith Weerasinghe, Nanjana Wijesooriya, Shakeek and Gayan Perera put the game to bed for the visitors before the second half could have even begun.

Half Time: Ananda College 06 (2P) trail Vidyartha College 33 (5T 4C)

The visitors began the second half from where they left off, with the first try in the half coming through Eighth-man Ranidu Gajanayake. The big man was unstoppable and put on a show at the encounter.

16-year-old Deneth scored his team’s first try — the only spark of a rather dismal evening for the home team – carving open the visitors defence to score.

Tries continued for Vidyartha, thanks to Praveen De Mel and Nanjana Wijesooriya as the potent Tigers backline clicked in devastating fashion.

Ananda managed a second through Hooker Sachithra Kuragodage. However, that was about it as the Tigers were untouchable, helping them secure the William Gopallawa Shield for 2023.
