Left-handed batsman Upul Tharanga has been named as the replacement for the injured Angelo Mathews in the upcoming two-match Test series against Zimbabwe.
Hours before the Sri Lanka Test team departs to Zimbabwe for their first-ever Test series, Rangana Herath was announced as the Captain of the squad due to a calf injury to Angelo Mathews.
31-year old Upul Tharanga will slot into the inexperienced Sri Lankan middle order as the islanders will be without the services of their regular Captain, Angelo Mathews and Vice-Captain, Dinesh Chandimal due to injuries.
Rangana Herath to captain Sri Lanka in Zimbabwe
Tharanga made his Test debut in 2005 against India and since then have played 21 matches in an intermittent career which has now spanned over 11 long years. His final Test appearance came last year in the home series against India at SSC.
With only 1165 Test runs under his belt, Tharanga scored his career-best knock of 165 in only his 3rd Test match against Bangladesh in 2006 but since then has not been able to cross the three-figure mark.
The two-match series will commence on 29th October in Harare.
