Mahendra, Dinal hit fifties as Trinity College reach Semi-Finals

Trinity College, Kandy secured their Semi-Final spot beating Rahula College, Matara in the 2nd Quarter Final in the U17 Schools Division I Cricket Tournament 2023. The match took place today (3rd August) at De Mazenod College Grounds in Kandana. 

Rahula College Captain Akash Ambepitiya has decided to bowl first after winning the toss. 

After beginning the innings, Trinity College lost their first 3 wickets for 40 runs in 11.2 overs. Then, Mahendra Baratha and Dinal Fernando stitched together in a superb 123-run partnership for the 4th wicket. Both the batters went on to register their respective fifties, which helped the Trinitians to post 238/6 in their 50 overs. 

Baratha was their top scorer as he made 72 off 95 balls, including 10 fours & 1 six, while Fernando has built a solid innings to score 55 runs facing 100 balls with 9 fours. With the ball in hand, Risinu Ginuka has bagged 2/33 while Imeth Manamperi, Ishantha Gimhana, Nadil Sandesh and Manage Resali have taken a wicket each for Rahula College. 

Chasing 239 to win, Rahula lost their first 2 wickets with just 15 runs on the board. However, Risinu Ginuka joined Pawara Pabasara to rebuild their innings, and the duo added 60 runs for the 3rd wicket. Pabasara was dismissed after scoring a 44-ball 38. 

After that wicket, the set batter, Ginuka got no support from the other end as they were bowled out for 177 in 43 overs. Ginuka made 70 runs off 126 deliveries which included 6 fours & 1 six. On the bowling front, Viduneth Dhammage and Ammaar Manzil picked up a couple of wickets each. Apart from them, Chaniru Hansana, Kanilka Anthony, Dinal Fernando and Malika Vithanage shared 4 wickets between them. 

The other three Quarter-Finals are yet to be held as below. 

  • Quarter-Final 1 – Maliyadeva College vs Prince of Wales’ College 
  • Quarter-Final 3 – St. Servatius’ College vs De Mazenod College 
  • Quarter-Final 4 – St.Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa vs St. Peter’s College
