Umesh Yadav will replace ace paceman Jasprit Bumrah for the three upcoming Tests against South Africa. Bumrah was ruled out of the series with a minor stress fracture in his lower back.

Bumrah, who was rested from the T20I series that the two sides drew 1-1, had his injury detected during a routine radiological screening. “He will now undergo rehabilitation at NCA and will be monitored by the BCCI Medical Team,” the board stated in a release on Tuesday (September 24).

Umesh, who hadn’t been picked in the initial squad, last played a Test in Perth 2018 when India toured Australia, bagging two wickets in the first innings. He, however, remained wicketless in the second. In 41 Tests so far, Umesh has 119 wickets, averaging 33.47.
The first of three Tests kicks off on October 2 in Vizag, followed by Tests in Pune and Ranchi.
