Udaya Ranasinghe and Hansani Piumila were adjudged the Most Outstanding Players at the Colombo Mayor’s Cup All Island Open Ranking Table Tennis Championship 2016, concluded at the Bandula Gunawardane Indoor Stadium, Lumbini College Colombo 05.
Sri Lanka rank number one Udaya Ranasinghe bagged three titles; Men’s Singles, U21 Boys’ and U18 Boys’ Singles, while Hansani Piumila who is ranked number seven, won the Girls’ U18 title and was runner-up in the Women’s Singles.
Ranasinghe was stretched to the 5th set in the U18 Boys’ final by Supuna Warusawithana of Ananda College. Ranasinghe won the first two sets 11-09 and 11-05 but Warunsawithana bounced back winning the next two 07-11 and 08-11 setting up a thrilling final set. Ranasinghe proved his worth winning the decider 11-09.
Ranasinghe met fellow Vidyartha College teammate Krishan Wickramarathna in the final of the U21 Boys’ Singles and won in three sets. He won the first set 11-09 while Wickramarathna gave a fight in the second but lost 13-11. The 3rd set went 11-09 in favour of the winner.
In the Men’s Open Singles final Ranasinghe faced former number one and Sri Lanka Captain Rohan Sirisena. Sirisena won the first set 05-11 but Ranasinghe bagged the 2nd and 3rd winning 11-08 and 11-06. Ranasinghe went onto win 12-10 and 11-04 in the best of seven sets final.
Hansani Piumila won the U18 Girls’ Singles defeating rank number four Chamathsara Fernando also of Visakha Vidyalaya in four sets. Chamathsara won the first set 09-11 but Hansani bettered her rival and won the next three winning 11-09, 11-04 and 12-10.
Another one of Sri Lanka squad members matched up when Ruvini Kannangara of SLIIT faced Erandi Warusavithana of University of Sri Jayawardenapura in the Girls’ U21 Singles final. Ruvini had a stroll winning 11-09, 11-02 and 11-09 against the Sri Lanka number two ranked player.
In the Open Women’s Singles final Hansani faced the daunting task of facing the experienced Sri Lanka number one Ishara Madurangi. Hansani gave a fight in the first set but was no match for Madurangi as she won 11-08, 11-02, 11-06, and 11-04.
The tournament was organized by the Colombo District Table Tennis Association in collaboration with the Playgrounds & Recreation Department of the Colombo Municipal Council.
