U21 NSBM Green 7 next weekend

The ‘NSBM Green 7s’ is the newly introduced Schools Sevens Tournament that will kick-off at the Racecourse International Rugby Stadium on the 08th of September.

The media briefing to officially announce the event took place earlier this week (28th of August) at the NSBM Green University, Homagama, with the participation of the President of the Sri Lanka Rugby Association, Lasitha Gunarathna and other officials from SLR.

With 16 Schools already having confirmed their participation, the Sri Lanka Referees Federation (SLRF) is set to officiate and oversee the rules and regulations of this inaugural tournament. Moreover, senior rugby referee Mr. Tony Amith, stated that the SLRF hopes to add this tournament into the Rugby Calendar in the years to come.

Addressing the gathering, the organizing committee President Mr. Baratha Dodangkotuwa stated that as a leading University in Sri Lanka, it is the duty and responsibility of the institution to produce good citizens to the society. Which is why they believe by organizing a Rugby tournament they will be able to inculcate within the young adults good qualities.

Futhermore he added that NSBM wishes to invite Schools from around the globe to partake in the tournament, and gradually organize more tournaments for sports like a basketball, swimming, Volleyball and Netball.

Teams will compete under the Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield Categories whilst the Champions will also recieve a special cash prize promised the organizing committee.
