Trinity College, St. Joseph’s College and Maris Stella College qualified for the Finals of the U19 Schools Cricket Division 1 Tier ‘A’ and Tier ‘B’ 2022/23 season.
An U19 Division 1 Tier ‘A’ Semi-final between Trinity College, Kandy and Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala was played today for the 2nd day, at Kirimandala Mawatha Cricket Grounds.
On this morning, Trinity College added another 93 runs before being bowled out for 199. Overnight batter Dinusha Peiris was their top scorer with 45 runs, while Dinuka Thennakoon made a useful 36 in a 55-run stand with Tharana Wimaladarma for the 9th wicket. In the bowling department, Charuka Herath and Dimath Abeysinghe shared 7 wickets between them.
Disappointingly, Maliyadeva were thrashed for 99 runs in the 2nd innings by the Trinity bowlers, led by Tharana Wimaladarma who bagged back-to-back 4 wickets, while Jayavi Liyanagama got 3/6.
In the end, Trinity College chased down the target of 40 in just 10 overs with 7 wickets in hand, and qualified for the Division 1 Tier ‘A’ Final.
Muralitharan, Fernando tons light up Division 1 semis
The 2nd Semi-final of the U19 Division 1 Tier ‘A’ competition was played today between St. Joseph’s College and St. Benedict’s College at S. Thomas’ College Junior Grounds in Mt. Lavinia.
From the overnight score of 294/3, the Josephians exceeded their 1st innings total beyond a 400-run mark, declaring on 439/7, with Avintha De Alwis also smashing a hundred. Apart from this, Muditha Dissanayake made 78 runs and Lahiru Amarasekara remained unbeaten on 46.
When the match ended in draw, St. Benedict’s College were on 89/6, and St. Joseph’s College were able to book their place in the Finals with the advantage of first round, where they will meet Trinity College .
St. Servatius’ secure a promotion by reaching the finals
The other Semi-final from the U19 Division 1 Tier ‘B’ round was played today at Surrey Village Grounds in Maggona, between St. Aloysius’ College and Maris Stella College.
Maris Stella College decided to declare their 1st innings after posting 311/8 this morning. Ramith Bandara got a fifty, while Oshada Devinda took 3 wickets. Due to rain interruptions, there was no chance to play enough Cricket, seeing St. Aloysius’ College batting for only 20 overs and the match ending in a draw.
Despite St. Aloysius’ being ahead of Maris Stella in the 1st round, Maris Stella College sealed their spot in the Final on their 1st innings points, and will take on St. Servatius’ College in the Final. They are also promoted to the Division 1 Tier ‘A’ 2023/24 season.
