Six 2-day encounters of the U19 Inter-Schools Cricket Tournament were played today (29th December) at several venues across the island.

St. Sebastian’s College claimed first innings points against St. Benedict’s College in their Tier ‘A’ two-day encounter which ended in a draw today at Moratuwa. After being 19/1 at stumps on day one, the visitors were bowled out for 204 runs with a first-innings deficit of 147 runs.

The prolific left-hander Sharujan Shanmuganathan was once again outstanding with the bat for the Bens as he made a classy knock of 80 runs. Yashin Fernando was the chief wrecker with the ball for the hosts as he snared 5 wickets for 38 runs.

Devapathiraja College also bagged first innings points St. Anthony’s College in their Tier ‘B’ two-day encounter ended in a draw today at MRICS, Hambantota. After being 228/5 at stumps on day one, Devapathiraja College lost the remaining 5 wickets for just 26 runs being bowled out for 254 runs but managed to extend their first innings lead to 137 runs.

The boys from Wattala showcased a much-improved batting performance in their 2nd essay posting 288/6 at the close of play on day two. Vihanga Rashmitha (106*), Shan Samaradivakara (80) and Amitha Sandeepa (60) caught the attraction with excellent knocks.

Prince of Wales College dominated their traditional encounter against D.S. Senanayake College on day one at D.S. Senanayake College Grounds. Having won the toss, the visitors put on a massive total on the board thanks to brilliant centuries scored by Tharindu Amarasinghe and Sumalka Fernando.

Amarasinghe’s mammoth score of 174 runs came off 172 balls with 22 fours and 2 sixes at a strike rate of 101.16 while Fernando made a patient knock of unbeaten 100 runs off 180 balls with 7 fours.

Meanwhile, Nalanda College managed to take the upper hand against Royal College in their traditional encounter that commenced today at Royal College Grounds. Having been asked to bat first, the hosts were bowled out for a paltry score of 105.

In reply, the visitors posted 143/6 at the close of play on day one. Rusiru Vilochana top-scored for Nalanda College with a well-compiled 64 runs.
