Four 2-day matches of the U19 Inter Schools Cricket Tournament were played today (28th January) at several venues across the island. 

The traditional encounter between S. Thomas’ College and St. Sebastian’s College ended in a draw today at Mount Lavinia. St. Sebastian’s College posted 211 runs in reply to S. Thomas’ College first innings total of 268.

Sasindu Prarthana and Vimath Dinsara starred with the bat for the visitors, contributing with half-centuries, while Abheeth J. Paranawidana and Nathan Caldera impressed with the ball for the hosts, taking 3 wickets each.

  1. Thomas’ College began their 2nd inning 57 runs ahead and posted 163/5 at the close of play on day two. Romesh Mendis stole the limelight with a classy half-century.

The traditional encounter between Trinity College and Mahanama College also ended in a draw today at Asgiriya International Cricket Stadium in Kandy. After being 56/4 at stumps on day one, Mahanama College were bowled out for 201 runs for their first innings.

Trinity College began their 2nd innings 7 runs ahead and showed a much better batting display, posting 267/5 at the close of play on day two. Manula Kularathna and Lakvin Abeysinghe stood out with the bat for the hosts, scoring a century and a half-century respectively.

Kularathna scored an unbeaten 100 runs off 104 balls with 4 fours and 6 sixes, while Abeysinghe contributed with an unbeaten knock of 84 runs off 138 balls, including 11 fours and 2 sixes. The duo added a 193-run stand for the 6th wicket, sending the Mahanama bowlers on a leather hunt.

St. Anthony’s College registered an 8-wicket win over Wesley College in their traditional encounter which ended today at St. Anthony’s College Grounds in Kandy. Rayan Anthonyzs (50*), Abhishek Induwara (38 & 3/16) and Thisara Ekanayake (4/49) were the chief architects of the hosts’ victory.

Devapathiraja College managed to claim first innings points against Dharmasoka College in their Tier ‘B’ 2-day encounter, which ended in a draw today at UC Grounds in Ambalangoda. After posting 308 runs for the first innings, Devapathiraja College restricted Dharmasoka College to just 168 runs.

After been asked to follow on, the boys from Ambalangoda once again faltered with the bat being bowled out for 215. Irushka Thimira was brilliant with the ball for Devapathiraja College as he bagged a match bag of 13 wickets.
