Three 2-day encounters of the U19 Inter-Schools Cricket Tournament were played today (28th December) at several venues across the island.

Vihas Thewmika’s exceptional all-round brilliance helped Thurstan College record a convincing 6-wicket win over Moratu Maha Vidyalaya in their Tier ‘B’ two-day encounter worked off today at MCA Grounds, Colombo.

The Moralians managed to take first innings honors thanks to a brilliant century made by Isuru Fernando, but Thurstan College made a strong comeback in the 2nd innings bowling out the opposition for just 92 runs.

Thurstan College chased down the target of 105 runs quite comprehensively with 6 wickets in hand. Thewmika was the star performer for the victorious Thurstan College as he picked up a match bag of 8 wickets for 71 runs while contributing with vital 43 runs with the bat.

St. Sebastian’s College displayed a dominant batting performance on day one of their Tier ‘A’ two-day encounter against St. Benedict’s College which began today at Moratuwa. Having been asked to bat first, the hosts posted 351 runs for 9 wickets before declaring their innings.

Mahen Silva was the chief contributor with the bat as he brought up an excellent century while Vimath Dinsara and Nadeesh Fernando chipped in with useful half-centuries for St. Sebastian’s College.

Meanwhile, Devapathiraja College managed to take the upper hand on day one of their Tier ‘B’ two-day encounter against St. Anthony’s College which commenced today at MRICS, Hambantota. Having won the toss, the Rathgama boys chose to bowl first and managed to restrict the Antonians to just 117 runs in their first innings.

In reply, Devapathiraja College showcased a much better batting performance posting 228/5 at the close of play on day one. Pawan Sandesh was outstanding with the bat for the Southern boys as he stroked an unbeaten 159 runs off 124 balls with 16 fours and 6 sixes at a strike rate of 128.23.
