Two 2-day encounters of the U19 Inter-Schools Cricket Tournament got underway today (19th December), at Colombo and Dombagoda.
Tharindu Amarasinghe’s brilliant century stole the limelight on day one of the Tier ‘A’ two-day encounter between Prince of Wales College and Richmond College, which got underway today at SLAOC International Cricket Stadium in Dombagoda.
Having been asked to bat first, the Cambrian opening batter Amarasinghe complied 123 runs off 152 balls with 9 fours and 4 sixes, as Prince of Wales College posted 233 runs in 67.1 overs. No. 4 batter Omesh Mendis also played a crucial 85-run knock for the Cambrians.
Sri Lanka U19 cap Malsha Tharupathi and Tharinda Nirmal picked up 4 wickets each for the boys from Galle. In reply, Richmond College made 92/3 at stumps on day one. The match will continue tomorrow for day two.
The Tier ‘B’ two-day encounter between St. Peter’s College and St. Aloysius’ College also commenced today at Peterson Grounds in Colombo. After been asked to bat first, St. Peter’s College were bowled out for a paltry score of 102 runs in 23.4 overs.
In reply, St. Aloysius’ College also struggled with the bat, but managed to cross St. Peter’s total, putting on 128 runs on the board. The Peterites began their 2nd innings 26 runs behind, but showcased a much better batting effort in their 2nd essay as they posted 61 runs for the loss of only 1 wicket at the close of play on day one.
