Six 2-day encounters of the U19 Inter Schools Cricket Tournament were played today (14th January) at several venues across the island.
Nalanda College registered a convincing 10-wicket win over Dharmaraja College in their traditional encounter which ended today at Nalanda College Grounds in Colombo.
Minod Caldera was the star performer for the victorious Nalanda College as he claimed a match bag of 9 wickets for 102 runs.
St. Sebastian’s College registered a thrilling win over Mahanama College in their Tier ‘A’ two-day encounter which was worked off today at St. Sebastian’s College Grounds in Moratuwa.
Sandeesh Fernando and Manuja Chanthuka, who picked up match bags of 9 and 7 wickets respectively, were the heroes with the ball for the hosts. Vimath Dinsara’s crucial half-century in the second innings also played a pivotal role in St. Sebastian’s College’s victory.
The traditional encounter played between S. Thomas’ College and Wesley College for the Mahadevan Sathasivam Challenge Trophy ended in a draw today at S. Thomas’ College Grounds in Mount Lavinia.
After being 76 for no loss, the visitors were bowled out for 226 runs for their first innings, losing 10 wickets for just 150 runs on day two and witnessing a major batting collapse. Sanithu Amarasinghe was the star performer with the bat for Wesley College, whereas Akash Fernando starred with the ball for the Thomians, picking up 3 wickets for 43 runs.
The hosts put on another decent show with the bat in the second innings, posting 204/5 at the close of play on day two. Romesh Mendis stamped his authority with a classy half-century for S. Thomas’ College.
The traditional encounter between Royal College and St. Joseph’s College also ended in a draw today at St. Joseph’s College Grounds in Colombo. The talking point of the match was Hiran Jayasundara’s brilliant double century which stole the limelight at Darley Road.
He stroked an unbeaten 200 runs off 309 balls, with 18 fours and 3 sixes becoming the fifth Josephian to score a double century and also the first to score against Royal College, breaking the record held by Roshan David who scored 199 against Wesley College
