Three matches of the Singer U19 Division I tournament began today. Two matches kick-started at Colombo while St. Anne’s College Kurunegala hosted Richmond at their backyard.
Spinners bowl St. Sebastian’s to thumping victory
Nalanda College, Colombo vs Mahinda College, Galle
The traditional match between the two schools was played at Nalanda College grounds. Visiting captain, Vinura Dulsara called the toss correct and invited the hosts to bat first. Taking maximum use of the invitation, the Nalandians amassed 324 runs for the loss of 9 wickets at close of play.
Sri Lanka U19 caps, captain Lakshitha Manasinghe and Chamindu Wijesinghe built an impressive partnership for the 4th wicket to rebuild the Nalanda innings after losing 3 wickets early on in the day. Following the dismissal of Lakshitha for 72 the Mahindian bowling attack led by Sri Lanka U19 cap Nipun Malinga managed to jolt the Nalandians with 4 quick wickets. Mahima Weerakon batting low down the order, then stood firm for Nalanda with a fighting half-century helping his team reach the 300-run mark.
In bowling for the boys from Galle, left-arm spinner Pasan Pethangoda impressed bagging 5 wickets for 73 runs while Malinga picked up 2 crucial wickets in the middle.

St. Anne’s College, Kurunegala vs Richmond College, Galle
The Group ‘D’ fixture between Richmond College and St. Anne’s College began at St. Anne’s College grounds today. Richmond gained advantage on the opening day after winning the toss.
Captain Kavindu Ranasinghe top scored for St. Anne’s with 87 runs as they scored a modest 180 in 83.3 overs. Sri Lanka U19 cap Dilum Sadeera starred for Richmond picking up 6 wickets while, all-rounder Sandun Mendis, who is also a Sri Lanka U19 cap, bagged 3 wickets.
In reply, Richmond College finished the day without losing a single wicket as the opening pair of Adithya Siriwardena and Vinuja Kiriella remained unbeaten with their team total on 58.

Isipathana College, Colombo vs Devapathiraja College, Rathgama
Devapathiraja College ended day 1 on a high in the Group ‘A’ fixture hosted by Isipathana College at BRC grounds in Colombo.
The boys from Rathgama posted 273 runs in 89.3 overs as Pathum Madusanka scored a brilliant 98. Jeewaka Rashmika also contributed 81 valuable runs while Savindu Uthsara grabbed 3 wickets for Isipathana being the pick of the bowlers for his team.
In reply the hosts lost 2 early wickets as they ended day 1 on 26/2, trailing by 247 runs.
