Four pre-quarter final playoffs of the Singer U19 Division I L/O Cricket Tournament 2019/20 were played today in several parts of the country.
League toppers Trinity College registered a convincing 91-run win over Dharmapala College today in Kandy. Thevin Amarasinghe, Ranuda Somarathna and Vice Captain Abhishek Anandakumara steered them to a commendable total of 275 after winning the toss. The visitors managed just 184 batting the whole of their allotted 50 overs. The winners of the Maliyadeva College vs St. Benedict’s College playoff will meet Trinity College in the pre-quarter final.
A repeat of the 2018 50-over tournament’s final happened today in Galle as St. Peter’s College took on the former runners-up. Similar to the 2018 finals, Richmond got the better of St. Peter’s in a thrilling finish as they chased down the 199 scored by the Peterites in the penultimate over with just 2 wickets in hand. Dimuth Sandaruwan and Bhanuka Manohara led the Richmond chase with valuable knocks, while Wanuja Kumara shone with his all-round skills for St. Peter’s despite their loss.
Former Sri Lanka Test Captain TM Dilshan’s son, Resandu Thilakarathna starred for Royal College with a match-winning knock of 75 against Devapathiraja College today at Reid Avenue. Sadish Rajapaksha and Harindu Paliyawadana also contributed with vital knocks for Royal before fast bowler Sonal Amarasekara led their defense with 4 wickets. They will now meet St. Joseph Vaz College in the pre-quarter final.
Mahanama College comfortably defeated Isipathana College by 6 wickets to set up an exciting pre-quarter final clash against Richmond College. Their most prolific bowler of the season, left-arm spinner Devindu Kekirideniya, once again starred for them with a 5-wicket haul.

Apart from the knockout games, two more traditional games began today in Kurunegala and Colombo. St. Sebastian’s College were in trouble against the home team, St. Anne’s College, with 8 wickets down for 100 in reply to the 148 made by the Annites.
In the other game, Wesley College skipper Rahul Gunasekara led his team well, scoring 164 as they amassed 351 against Kingswood College. Gunasekara was well-accompanied by two half-centuries from Sahil Dias and Thilshan Senanayake. In reply, Kingswood were in deep trouble, losing 7 wickets for just 65 runs as left-arm spinner Thenuka Perera picked up 4 wickets for the home team.
