The last quarter-final of the Singer Schools Under 19 Division 1 (two-day) Cricket Tournament 2018/19 was commenced today (Wednesday) between St. Joseph’s College and Prince of Wales’ College at the Army Cricket grounds, Panagoda

The Cambrians won the toss and decided to bowl first in the battle for the last semi-final berth in the tournament, but the day ended in a completely bizarre way dimming their chances to qualify.

The Josephians came into this game fresh from their triumph in the limited-overs leg of the big match vs St. Peter’s College but lost their top order for a few runs to the spin attack of Prince of Wales’ College.

The skillful all-rounder from Darley Road, Dunith Wellalage made a crucial contribution with the bat to solidify the St. Joseph’s innings, scoring a half-century with the assistance of the vice-captain Johanne de Zilva who also made a fighting 43.

The duo from the Daniel family, Ashain and Shevon added 28 and 29 respectively to take the team total to 235 runs at the end of 79.3 overs.

With the ball in hand, right arm off spinner Lakshan Shashika and the century-maker in this season’s wicket column Kaumal Nanayakkara picked up 3 wickets each while the captain Suwath Mendis chipped in with two.

Prince of Wales’ College started their reply positively but lost 4 wickets in no time to end the day at 25 for 4, still needing a steep 210 runs to avoid a first innings defeat, with only 6 wickets in hand. The chief destroyer was the opening pacey Lakshan Gamage who was responsible for all 4 Cambrian wickets.
