Mahanama College earned major honors post a thumping display of batting against Maliyadeva College at Bloomfield. Two more games of Singer U19 Division 1 Cricket Tournament got underway today, the 27th of January 2020.
Mahanama College, Colombo vs Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala
Mahanama College hosted the school from the city of rocks in a group ‘C’ encounter. Skipper Pawantha Weerasinghe won the toss and had no hesitation to bat first on a batting-friendly surface. He backed his decision with an outlandish display of batting to take Mahanama to an elephantine score of 502 runs. Weerasinghe brought up the first double century of the season, as the left-hander amassed 226 runs to hold the highest score of the season. Sri Lanka U19 coloursman Pavan Rathnayake smacked his second consecutive ton to put Mahanama miles ahead in the game. Vinuka Rubasinghe also chipped in with a half-century to his merits. Mahanama No.3, No.4 and No.5 shared over 400 runs between them on day one of the game.
Bowling was out of contention in the day as the best figures were the 3 for 129 runs by Hasindu Ruwanpura. He seemed to be the only bowler who managed to grind in hard and pull something off that surface; however the masterpiece by Weerasinghe still outshone everything else. Mahanama College declared their innings with about 10 overs to go in the day after losing 4 wickets.
S. Thomas’, Richmond & St. Peters’ take the upper hand
In reply, Maliyadeva College posted 20 runs for 1 wicket at the close of play on day one. They lost their skipper early on day two, as Muditha Premadasa departed for 33 runs this morning. Devindu Kekirideniya wrapped his 3rd fifer of the season, bagging 5 for 20. Nisal Akash assisted him in the assault with 3 wickets to his name.
The inevitable follow-on was enforced at the Devans. It looked as if it was a Weerasinghes’ game as another Weerasinghe came out with just 1 run short of a century for Maliyadeva College, while another assisted him with 46 runs to save the game for the Kurunegala school. Matheesha Weerasinghe (99) and Gayana Weerasinghe (46) resisted the pressure set by the Mahanama bowlers and pulled their alma mater out of an innings outright defeat. Devindu Kekirideniya missed out on a match-bag 10-wicket haul as the left-arm spinner had to settle down for 4 wickets in the second innings. Maliyadeva College was at 208 for 5 by sunset on day two.
