Dharmapala betters St. Thomas’ in a rain-affected affair

Dharmapala College, Pannipitiya battled it out with St. Thomas’ College, Matara on the 24th and 25th of October at Uyanwatta grounds, Matara. Several other games of Singer U19 division one schools cricket tournament 2018/19 commenced today (25th October).

Dharmapala batted first as St. Thomas’ skipper won the toss and opted to bowl first. A hard-fought 89 from Dulaj Egodage took Dharmapala to a reasonable 204 runs, to give their bowlers something to work with.

In reply, St. Thomas’ had a tough run as they struggled and reached 159 runs, losing all their wickets. Dilshan de Silva took four scalps while the top-scorer for St. Thomas’ was Harindu Jayasekara, who made 41 runs. Shevon Somasundara also picked up 3 wickets for 25 runs.

Dharmapala was on 34 for 4 when the game ended in a draw. The little episode of the rain in between also meant that the game is definitely going to be a draw while Dharmapala College earned first innings points.

The game was played at the S. Thomas’ grounds. The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. The Thomians gave the lads from Galle a bitter welcome as they bowled them out for 83 runs. The right-arm leg spinner Dilmin Rathnayake and the left-armer Delon Peiris bowled well in tandem as the pair shared 7 scalps in between them.

Ravindu Fernando spins Maris Stella College to massive victory

S.Thomas’ in reply, scored 151 runs for the loss of 8 wickets. Diyon Fernando scored the most with 42 runs to his name. Manushka Samith, Niduka Samarasekara, Sandun Madusanka all picked up 2 wickets each. The game will resume tomorrow for day 2.

De Mazenod College, Kandana vs St. Peter’s College, Colombo

Peter’s had a poor day with the bat although their bowlers did well against the visiting De Mazenod College, Kandana. De Mazenod won the toss and elected to bat first. Tall and lean fast bowler Santhush Gunathilake took charge very early and bagged 6 wickets for just five runs. Senesh Fernando scored a fighting 68 runs while Nadun Dilshan and Mark Mathiyas supported him with 33 and 32* respectively.

When the Peterites came out to bat, the wind had probably changed directions, as top five of the batting line-up were back in the pavilion in no time. St. Peters was at 24 for 5 when the umpires took the bails off.

St. Joseph’s College, Colombo vs Mahinda College, Galle

St. Joseph’s College met Mahinda College in a group ‘A’ fixture at Darley Road today. The boys from Maradana won the toss and elected to bat first. Young Shevon Daniel stepped up for duty once again as he top-scored with an elegant 68 runs to his name. The Joes were bowled out for 233 runs in 56.5 overs. Subanu Rajapakshe and Pasan Petangoda took 3 wickets each while Vinura Dulsara accounted for 2 scalps.

Mahinda College in reply, was at 13 for 1 by the end of the day. The game will resume tomorrow for day 2.
