Two traditional encounters of Schools U19 Cricket tournament commenced today (11th April) at Colombo. Thomian tailender batsman Yasiru Rodrigo’s fighting half-century against St. Joseph’s College was the highlight of the first day’s play.

Thomas’ College skipper Shalin de Mel won the toss and elected to bat first but they lost 2 early wickets in the first 10 overs for 35 runs. The opening batsman Anuk Palihawadena (54) and number four batsman Ryan Fernando (71) rescued the innings with half-tons but after their dismissals, the visitors lost their way as they were reeling at 160 for 6.

However, Yasiru Rodrigo who came to bat at number 8 stroked a blinder of an innings putting the Thomians in a strong position at stumps on day one. Rodrigo stroked an unbeaten knock of 97 runs off 152 balls with 6 fours and 5 sixes.

In-form batsman Pavan Rathnayake once again top-scored for Mahanama College with a knock of 81 runs off 130 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes. Pasindu Tennakoon was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts as he grabbed 4 wickets for 51 runs.
