Three games in the U19 Division I schools cricket tournament semi-final stage were played today, with Richmond College, Galle, securing their spot in the finals in tier ‘A’. The remaining semi-finals in tiers ‘A’ and ‘B’ commenced today for day one.
Richmond College, Galle capitalised on their dominant performance on day one today by restricting St. Sebastian’s College well short of their first innings total. Richmond College scored a mammoth 330 runs thanks to Thamindu Pradeeptha’s brilliant 191 runs in their first innings. In reply, the Sebastianites were bundled out of 240 runs by the Richmond bowlers.
Yuri Kothigoda was the pick of the bowlers for Richmond, He ended up with figures of 3 for 26 runs. The only batter to make a significant impact on St. Sebastian’s innings was Vimath Dinsara, Dinsara scored a fighting 63 runs which was not enough to take the Sebastianites over the line.
Trinity College ended day one on top in their encounter versus Mahanama College, Colombo at St. Peter’s College grounds. Trinity College batters managed to put on a competitive score on the board, Dimantha Mahavithana top scored for the Trinitians with 63 runs, also Vathila Udara and Manula Kularathne made very useful contributions by scoring 45 and 38 runs respectively.
Inuka Karannagoda as usual this season was the go-to bowler for the Mahanama Captain this outing as well. Inuka finished with impressive figures of 6 for 71, his bowling display largely reduced the damage to be done by the Trinity batters.
At Welisara Navy grounds Isipathana College, Colombo bowled out St. Peter’s College, Colombo in their first innings for a cheap 128 runs. Isipathana skipper Sithuka Gunwardene topped the bowling chart for the Pathanians with figures of 4 for 49.
In reply, Isipathana made a solid start thanks to opener Ruchith Rodrigo’s blistering 42-run cameo. At stumps for day one Isipathana College sits in a rather comfortable position at 134
