India U19s dominated Sri Lanka U19s in the Final of the ACC U19 Asia Cup 2021, as they won the game by 9 wickets to be crowned as the champions.
The Lankans won the toss and surprisingly opted to bat first, despite having known about the showers early that morning.
The defending champions pounced on the opportunity as they unleashed their workhorses, the pace battery, to have a hard go at the Lankan batters. Using the conditions to best effect, the Indian seamers strangled the Lankans to a point of no remedy.
Half the Lankan batters were back in the dressing room by the end of the 23rd over with the score at just 47 runs.
The wicket did not just aid the speedsters, but also soon started to take a spin, and the Indian spinners feasted on that opportunity too.
The spin duo Kaushal Tambe and Vicky Ostwal rubbed salt on the open wounds of the Lankans as they shared 5 scalps among them in no time.
Ostwal was simply too good for the Lankan middle-order as the left-arm spinner only gave away 11 runs, picking up 3 wickets.
By the end of the 33rd over, the skies opened up – A rare sight at the Ring of Fire. That meant the game was reduced to a 38-over affair. When the game resumed, the Lankans had 5 overs left to bat on 74 for 7.
Raveen de Silva, Yasiru Rodrigo and Matheesha Pathirana showed a bit of resistance at the bottom of the order, but by then the Lankans had drowned too deep too soon.
Poor shot selections, a lack of singles and failure to read the conditions better were the reasons for the dismal batting performance by the Lankans.
In reply, the Indian batters made the chase look like a cakewalk as they chased down the revised target of 102 runs in 21.3 overs for the loss of just a wicket.
Indian opener Angkrish Raghuvanshi played a stellar knock of 56 runs off 67 deliveries and remained unbeaten at the end.
There was nothing much to write about on the Lankan bowling front as the Indian batsmen never really allow them to get into the groove at any point of the innings.
With that win, India collected their 8th U19 Asia Cup trophy.
