Sri Lankan weightlifter Chathuranga Lakmal won the country’s first medal at the Commonwealth & Oceania Youth, Senior & Championship today (05th).
Held in Gold Coast Australia, the Commonwealth Oceania championship is conducted over a span of five days from 4th to 9th September. 19 Sri Lankan lifters have traveled to Australia and will compete in youth, senior and junior categories.
Chathuranga Lakmal who competed in the 56kg weight category, managed to snatch 117kg to win the Silver medal. This is also a new National record with the previous record being 110kg.
Hansini Gomes who competed in the 48kg weight category also managed to secure a bronze medal. National record holder for the snatch in the 48kg weight class, Hansini opened the medal count for the female competitors of the Island.
Olympian Sudesh Peiris will compete in 62kg category later today.
