Trinity and St Benedict’s record innings wins

Four matches of the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were concluded today around the island.

Dharmasoka College, Ambalangoda vs St. Benedict’s College, Colombo

Mahesh Theekshana’s all-round skills helped St. Benedict’s College record an innings victory against Dharmasoka College in the Group A clash which was concluded today at St. Benedict’s College Grounds. The home side resumed day two on 201 runs for 5 wickets and declared their innings at 300 for 7. Visitors began their second innings with 214 runs behind and managed to score only 154 runs all out. Off spinner Kaveesha Jayathilaka was the pick of the bowlers with 5 wickets in the innings while off spinner Mahesh Theekshana picked up a match bag of 7 wickets for 70 runs.

Trinity College, Kandy vs Moratu Maha Vidyalaya, Moratuwa

Trinity recorded an innings win against Moratu Maha Vidyalaya in the Group A fixture which was concluded today at the Asgiriya grounds. The lads from Moratuwa resumed their first innings on 55 for 3 and added only 42 runs for the remaining 7 wickets as they were bowled out for just 97 runs.

After being asked to follow on, the visitors did not show any improvement with the bat in the second innings as they were bundled out for just 41 runs. Fast bowler Ruvin Peiris ripped through the inexperienced batting line up of the visitors with 8 wickets for 23 runs.

St. Joseph’s College, Colombo vs Wesley College, Colombo

The 101st encounter played for the Bryan Claessan/Arthur Hakel Trophy ended in a draw but St. Joseph’s College managed to win first innings points over Wesley College in the game played at Darley road.

The visitors resumed day two on 72 for no wicket and played well to come closer to first innings total of St. Joseph’s but were eventually bowled out for 336 runs.

Left arm spinner Dunith Wellalage showed his class with the ball again as he picked up 6 wickets for the lads from Darley Road.

The top order batsmen of the hosts were unstoppable again in the second innings as Revan Kelly (75*) and Nipun Sumanasinghe (45) played two fine knocks.

Ananda College, Colombo vs St. Peter’s College, Colombo

The traditional fixture between St. Peter’s College and Ananda College also ended in a draw while giving first innings points to hosts St. Peter’s College. Shalith Fernando (95) and Ranmith Jayasena (91) guided St. Peter’s to 282 runs for 3 wickets as they declared the innings 131 runs ahead. The Ananda College batters struggled again in the second innings as they scored 155 for 6 wickets at stumps on day two. Shivan Perera was impressive with the ball for St. Peter’s as he picked up 3 wickets in both innings.
