The schools rugby season is nearly drawing to a close, and the day has dawn once again for what is considered to be the ‘blue ribbon’ of schools rugby, as the stage is set for the 69th Bradby Shield Encounter.

History

Looking back at the Bradby Shield which is slowly but surely closing towards reaching its diamond jubilee it could be concluded that it is definitely one of the most sought after sporting events in Sri Lanka, that generates a massive following, not only due to the illustrious histories of the two hallowed institutions that engage in this annual battle, but also due to the quality and intensity and most importantly ‘the spirit’ in which the game is played in.

In terms of the tally, the Trinitians lead 37  to Royal’s 30 with one encounter ending in a tie, as this two- legged sporting spectacle will be on show once again. The shield in itself, was donated by once Royal Principal E.L. Bradby in the light of developing the sport and enhancing the camaraderie of the two schools, and have featured individuals of the likes of Ken Balendra, Ajit Gunawardene, Maiya Gunasekara, Lakshman Kadirigamar, Denzil Kobbekaduwa and Duncan White are just a few of a long list of notable alumni of both schools.

Trinity – Negative Spiral, But Still ‘Favourites’

After a strong start to the season, with only one lapse against current table leaders Dharmaraja, Trinity have been title contenders until the very end. However, in the last few games, there has been a slight momentum drop that led to their first defeat in the league which was against St. Josephs which could prove to be costly in terms of the league.

However, the negative spiral does not rule out that the team has potential. The defeat to the Thomians proved to be a turning point in the season, as they failed to put games to bed with ease, as most of them ran down to the wire. Trinity has so far had very strong second half performances, as they were more often than not chasing games at the breather.

Playmaker Tarinda Ratwatte will be key going into the game. Having being criticized for his on/off nature in terms of concentration and execution his performance will be crucial to the outcome of the game in both legs. Halique Wadood being sidelined, enables Sanchana Shiek who has had an impressive season so far will have to play as the last man in defense.

Due to the absence of Captain Halique Wadood who was sidelined due to injury, Shahim Singhalaxana will lead the Lions in what is going to be a cracker of an encounter with over 10,000 spectators expected at Pallekele. Singhalaxana himself has had a brilliant season thus far.

Royal will be weary of the speedy Lochana Girihigama who tormented the team last year as well. Even though Trinity lost a few star players last year, the back line is considerably strong to inflict damage on Royal, who has an unpredictable defensive record.

Even though, the Trinitians have been faltering lately, they will go into this game much refreshed after a week’s break. As much as it is important in terms of the Bradby Shield, a victory would keep their hope up to win the league title as well.

Royal – Wounded ‘Under-dogs’

The boys from Reid Avenue have much to prove this season, but there have been increasing signs of improvement as games progressed. Initially, defense seemed to be the main problem as there was barely any shape or intent.

Led by the talented Rimze Jamaldeen, who has been an extremely vital player right through the season, Royal will look to achieve the right balance between their forwards and backs. Unlike previous Royal teams, the current squad do have a strong set of forwards, but the dependency on the big burly ones have reduced this season in comparison to the previous times.

Vice Captain Shuayb Muthaliph and Hooker Shuaib Jabbar will have to be at their best to support the forwards, with the latter having to be extremely accurate with his throwing, as they should not concede possession cheaply.

Royal who faced a lot of controversy after the Isipathana game will most probably have their full squad available amidst the injuries due to the incidents that sparked a huge debate. Pasindu Perera and Keshan Pieris will have important roles to play and will have to enhance the Royal attack.

In terms of speed, Nimshan Jayawardene will be expected to use all his experience, while the Trinitians yet have to see the ability of Udesh Eranga who has been in very good try scoring form this season. Again, Nevaan Perera as scrumhalf will have to take more responsibility,  and be quick with decisions to ensure Royal get maximum advantage.

Royal who started off at the bottom of the table, have gone on to fifth place, and a victory will also be crucial in order to confirm a place in next year’s Division 1A.

Interestingly, the first leg will be officiated by world renowned Jonothan Kaplan who is a record holder in terms of games refereed having refereed some of the top events in the world. His presence could have an impact of the game, as both teams will have to get used to the style and standard of refereeing that he would engage in.

In conclusion, just like the league, this year’s Bradby Shield Encounter will be extremely unpredictable, but Trinity will be labelled the definite favourites, while Royal will have an important point to prove, especially since they have not won since 2011.

ThePapare.Com wishes both teams all the very best ! Dont miss this great spectacle! It’s the BRADBY!
