A muddy encounter between the U16 rugby teams of Trinity College Kandy and St. Anthony’s College Katugasthota, ended at the Nittawela Rugby stadium earlier this evening. The skies opened up even before kick-off making the forwards of both teams the more important and the more dangerous. At the end of a thrilling match of 40 minutes, Trinity got over the line 24 points to 12 clinching their first victory of the Under 16 league Cup.
Trinity opened the scoring through some brilliant gap exploitation from their runners stepping in and out passing the Antonian Junior defenders. At half time Trinity led 12 points to nil with two unanswered tries with a single conversion. Trinity lacked the bulky forwards but had the fast runners who could have out burned anyone on the field.

In the second half however, Anthony’s learned from their mistakes as they used more of their forwards to pick and drive and get the rolling mauls and the running mauls in line as they managed to eventually score two important tries back to back to make it interesting. However, Trinity were too fast and better as they scored another two tries one being a brilliant intercept try by the full back who was handed the ball on a platter to run with no one trying to catch or defend him.

St. Anthony’s however received a walk over in the U14 game as Trinity withdrew from the tournament without fielding a team for the competition. Trinity will next host St. Joseph’s while Royal will come down to Kandy for their match against St. Anthony’s. Both teams will want to put in a more polished performance come the next week as both Royal and Joseph’s have played and demolished the other two teams in their respective age groups.
