Trinity College and Ananda College booked their places in the quarter-final line-up of the ‘Singer’ under 19 all-island limited overs cricket tournament 2015/16 on Tuesday.
Ananda College vs St. Joseph’s College
Ananda College prevailed in a low-scoring encounter against St. Joseph’s College beating the boys in blue & white by 3 wickets at Darley Road.
After opting to bat first, the hosts’ lost wickets at regular intervals as Sammu Ashan and Achila Eranga ripped through the Josephian batting line up to only 132 in 47 overs. Both spinners took 3 wickets apiece while no.10 batsman Ruchira Ekanayake top-scored with a fighting and unbeaten 36.
Chasing 133 runs to win, the visitors were stunned by the new-ball combination of Kavindu Jayathissa and Ruchira Ekanayake as they shared 5 wickets. Anandians were 56 for 7 in the 20th over but a match-winning unbroken 77-run stand for the 8th wicket between Lahiru Hiranya and Dinuka Gimhana saw them home. Hiranya made a cracking 51 with 7 fours while Gimhana blasted 5 fours for his 30.
Ananda College will now take on the winner of S. Thomas’ College vs Prince of Wales pre-quarter final clash.
St. Joseph College – 132 all out in 47 overs: Ruchira Ekanayake 36*, Revan Kelly 20, Harin Cooray 15, Sammu Ashan 3/24, Achila Eanga 3/22, Dileepa Jayalath 2/22.
Ananda College – 133/7 in 35.5 overs: Lahiru Hiranya 51*, Dinuka Gimhana 30*, Kavindu Jayatissa 3/37, Ruchira Ekanayake 2/22.
Trinity College vs Lumbini College
An exceptional left-arm bowling helped Trinity College nail down Lumbini College by 73 runs at Asgiriya Stadium.
The Lumbini skipper Mohommad Akram won the toss and elected to field first. The visitors bowled a tight line throughout the Trinity innings to restrict the hosts’ to only 174 runs. Young Thashila Dodangoda top-scored with 42 while run-machine Dilan Jayalath made 30. Spin duo, Thanuka Dabare and Vimukthi Kulathunga took 2 wickets apiece for the visitors.
Chasing 175 runs to win, the boys from Havelock Town struggled to put away the disciplined bowling of left-arm spinner Duvindu Tillakarathne and left-arm seamer Thisaru Dilshan. Tillakarathne was the most impressive bowler taking 4 scalps to bowl out the visitors for only 101 runs.
Trinity College will next take on St. Peter’s College in what would be a mouth-watering clash this weekend.
