The Cambrian Cricket Wing is set to host the 7th Premier Sixes tournament on the 24th and 25th of November at the Prince of Wales Grounds, Moratuwa.
Inaugurated in the year 2006, the tournament invited teams that are part of the Sri Lanka Cricket Premier League structure to engage in the ‘sixes’ version of the game. Since its inception, there have been numerous ‘big name’ players who have been part of the tournament. Sanath Jayasuriya, Mahela Jayawardene, T.M. Dilshan, Chamara Silva, Nuwan Soyza, Ajantha Mendis and Upul Tharanga are just a few of the long list of players who have represented Sri Lanka at national level, and have been part of this wonderful tournament.
Colts Cricket Club emerged Champions in the first ever tournament held six years ago after winning the finals against Bloomfield. Since then, Bloomfield have emerged winners for three consecutive years (2007-2009). Panadura and Saracens went on to win the 2010 and 2011 tournaments respectively.
Furthermore, BRC and Army have emerged runners up twice in the tournaments span thus far. Current Sri Lanka opening batsman, the hard hitting T.M. Dilshan has been adjudged as the Man of the Tournament twice in his career.
Speaking to the audience, President of the CCW Mr. Bandula de Silva went on to mention that all proceeds will be diverted to the improvement of the cricketing standards of Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa, as they hope to continue to host a successful tournament, and in turn serve their alma mater.
He also went on to state that Prize Money for the winners will be Rs. 100,000, for the runners up Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 10,000 will be awarded to the Best Bowler, Best Batsman, Man of the Tournament and the Batsman with the Most Sixes.
When considering tournament rules, most of the guidelines practiced by the ICC and the Hong Kong Sixes tournament will be applied. It is also important to note that a wide or a no ball will be considered as two extra runs added to the total.
Free Lanka Granite and USS Services will be the Sponsors and Co- Sponsors respectively.
This year’s tournament will include 24 teams, with last year’s Champions Saracens and runners up BRC receiving a ‘bye’ in the first round, in this knockout tournament. Matches will commence at 8.00 a.m. with two matches taking place simultaneously. The first two matches will be Badureliya v Old Cambrians and Panadura v Kurunegala.
