Thushen Silva recreates Sri Lankan Pole Vault history

Thushen Silva from Maris Stella College won the first medal for Sri Lanka in the 5th Asian Youth Athletics Championship 2023 in Uzbekistan on Wednesday.

Silva jumped 4.70m in the Boys Pole Vault event to win the silver medal. It is also his personal best and he also renewed the national youth record.

The last time a Sri Lankan athlete won a Pole Vault medal in the Asian level was way back in 1951 by MA Akbal, who too won a silver medal, representing Ceylon. However, in the 2016 South Asian Games, Ishara Sandaruwan bagged a Gold Medal in the Pole Vault event.

7 Athletes – 5 male and 2 females are currently in Uzbekistan for their respective events. Yathya Kirula, sprinter from Mahinda College, Galle won became third in his first-round heat with a timing of 48.57sec. He is expected to feature in the final.
