Thehas Rithmitha Kiringoda was crowned the U9 Open Champion in the World School Chess Championships 2023 held in Rhodes, Greece.
Thehas beat out 61 other competitors on his way to the championship which was held from 14th to 22nd April. The tournament was held as 9 rounds Swiss-system event with a time control of 90 minutes plus 30 seconds increment from move 01.
Thehas, who studies at Ananda College, won the championship with 7.5/9 points. He only lost one game in the 8th round, to Idan Eshkol of Israel. Aisultan Bissaliyev and Alimzhan Zhauynbay of Kazakhstan were placed 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Thehas defeated Aisultan Bissaliyev in the 4th round while his other wins came against Panormitis Patellis (Greece), Junyi Zhang (England), Lucas Torres (Sweden), Poyraz Efe Asici (Turkiye), Safarullakhan Safin (India) who is an Arena FIDE Master & Turbat Todmunkh (Mongolia).
After his loss in the 8th round, Thehas needed at least a draw, to become the champion, in the 9th and final round against Alimzhan Zhauynbay, which he managed to achieve.
