The necessary measures have been taken by the National Association of Fencing Srilanka (NAFSL) to hold the very first Fencing championship in Sri Lanka.
Commencing from Spain, Fencing has travelled all over the world. Nearly 150 countries have selected Fencing as a national game of their countries. In 2008, with the inception of the NAFSL, Fencing was started in Sri Lanka.
Fencing is a game which is played by using weapons. For this purpose, fencers have invented three kinds of weapons. Namely Foil, Saber and Epee. As this is a dangerous game, a Fencer who plays the game has to wear protective clothing which includes a Jacket, Glove, Plastron, Knickers and Mask.
NAFSL has done a great service in promoting Fencing in Sri Lanka. It is the registered governing body of Fencing in Sri Lanka and though NAFSL is one of the youngest sporting bodies in Sri Lanka, it has already gained a leading name for the service it has given through the last four years.
The Secretary General of NAFSL Ms. Kasuni Silva speaking at the media briefing held yesterday stated that they are to promote Sri Lankan fencing by concentrating on developing three priority areas such as athlete, equipment, and technical development. Furthermore she said that they will improve the training activities on a monthly basis in the near future.
To spread fencing within the Sri Lankans, NAFSL is to hold the very first Fencing Championship in December 2012 in Sri Lanka with the support of Unichela as sponsor. The championship will be held at the Unichela Fencing club premises in Panadura, on the 20th and 21st of December. For the closing ceremony on 21st of December, Hon. Sarath Ekanayake, the chief Minister of the Central Province and the President of Sri Lanka Basketball Federation will grace the occasion.
Furthermore NAFSL has stated that it has selected Indian coaches to improve the abilities and the skills of Sri Lankan fencers as Indians are the best South Asian Fencers.
As the literary meaning of fencing is defense, the hope of the NAFSL is to defeat the other countries and to produce the best fencers from Sri Lanka in the future.
