The Oranje beat Chile 2-0 on Monday to march into the World Cup last 16 as group winners and their boss believes they “more than deserved” their decisive victory
Louis van Gaal insists that “the more intelligent team won” after his Netherlands side beat Chile 2-0 on Monday to top their World Cup group.
Second-half goals from Leroy Fer and Memphis Depay sealed a 2-0 win over Chile on Monday to send the Oranje into the knockout phase with maximum points.
Chile dominated possession during the match and, although they were unable to create many meaningful chances, head coach Jorge Sampaoli and midfielder Arturo Vidal both hit out at Van Gaal’s tactics after the game, claiming Netherlands were simply out to defend.
However, the man soon to take charge at Manchester United has shrugged off the criticism, stating that, in his belief, the side with the more “astute” set-up got the win they deserved.
“El equipo más inteligente y el más astuto ganó el partido. Chile tuvo tres oportunidades, en otros partidos jugó muy ofensivo y hoy lo neutralizamos. En los otros dos partidos, nos enfrentamos a penaltis injustos y hoy vimos a uno (el árbitro) excelente”, dijo el holandés tras la conferencia de prensa en el estadio Arena Corinthians, de Sao Paulo.
El técnico holandés consideró que contra España y Australia sufrió errores arbitrales y que la FIFA debería sancionar a esos colegiados. “La FIFA debería hacer lo que hago yo con mis jugadores, quitarlos si no juegan bien”. Pese a lograr la puntuación ideal en un grupo en el que estaba el campeón del mundo, España, eliminado, respondió que hablar de ser candidato al título “depende de muchos factores diferentes, pero un equipo y un entrenador no siempre controla a estos elementos”.
Van Gaal dijo que no quería responder a su colega de Chile, Jorge Sampaoli, quien había calificado de defensivos a los naranjas. “No me interesa lo que diga el entrenador de Chile”, aseguró. Defendió poner a cinco jugadores en defensa para marcar las subidas de los laterales chilenos Eugenio Mena y Mauricio Isla, ante la pregunta de un periodista de su país. “Contésteme, le pregunto yo, cómo sería ser ofensivo para usted”, rebatió.
“No voy a sacrificar a Jermain Lens o a Arjen Robben por las subidas de Isla o Mena. No iban a aguantar si los seguían. Que quede claro: ellos no debían correr para atrás. De eso se trata el fútbol, de desarrollar una estrategia para ganar. Si uno no gana, le cortan la cabeza. Pero los resultados me dieron la razón” sostuvo.
El seleccionador holandés atribuyó a la “suerte” que los dos jugadores que entraron en el segundo tiempo, Leroy Fer y Memphis Depaya, hayan convertido los goles de la victoria. “El secreto del cambio es la suerte. Yo lo que puedo decir es que Fer dispara bien desde fuera del área, avanza bien en contraataques y en el cabezazo. Teníamos ventaja aérea contra Chile, que, sabíamos, siempre da ventajas en el terreno defensivo en los últimos minutos”, sostuvo.
Le preguntaron nuevamente si no era el Van Gaal de otros tiempos más ofensivo, a lo que aconsejó observar su currículum. Sostuvo que la marcha hacia el primer campeonato del mundo de Holanda se basa en un fundamento básico: “Mis jugadores y yo estamos convencidos de que tenemos material técnico y talento para desarrollar las estrategias que nos den la victoria. Siempre quiero anotar un gol más que el contrincante”.

“The most intelligent and astute team won,” he said after the match. “Chile had three chances. In other games, they played very offensively and today we neutralized them.
“In the other two games, we faced unfair penalties, and today we had an excellent referee.
“I don’t care what the Chile coach says.”
Van Gaal says his side have become comfortable in his new 5-3-2 system and feels the confidence within the camp is a cause for celebration.
“Nine points from three games, 10 goals for and three against, two unjustified penalties. No one expected this,” he added,
“The atmosphere in the group is fantastic. The players want to use the 5-3-2 system, they feel comfortable with it. That’s extremely important.
“We gave virtually nothing away and got a couple of opportunities in the first half. In the second we made two world-class goals. It was more than deserved.”
Netherlands will face one of Brazil, Croatia or Mexico in the next round.
