The Lankan Power-boat Association together with the Union Internationale Motonautique; the international governing body for powerboating has organized an eight day training program to a selected number of personalities who they believe that they could promote the sport locally and world-wide in the near future. A short press briefing was held yesterday at the Olympic House auditorium. 

The Lanka Powerboat Association the local representative of the UIM – the international governing body of power boating based in Monaco – has organized an eight-day training program with a top UIM commissioner from Monaco to develop the sport in Sri Lanka.

Eight candidates will be selected for this program running from April 9 to 19, and will be trained using P750, F4 and OYS boats in two locations with a mix of class based theory and on water training.

Candidates will follow a basic, advanced and championship course syllabus, at the end of which the Commissioner will conduct an examination, the successful completion of which will accredit and recognize candidates Eight candidates will be selected for this program running from April 9 to 19, and will be trained using P750, F4 and OYS boats in two locations with a mix of class based theory and on water training as UIM officials who would be eligible to officiate locally and internationally.

Trainees will be equipped with a range of opportunities to enhance tourism, such as provide package holiday powerboat experiences, hold corporate events giving businesses an opportunity to give clients and their workforce a powerboat experience , run courses either as residential or society based for children from the age of 9-16 around the country, developing a youth program to encourage young adults to drive at speed with strict guidelines and a carefully structured learning program, conduct courses at hotel locations for a tourist and Sri Lankan clientele, run local races, officiate and host World Championship International races, and run Grand Prix events.

Mr. Ishan Fernando – one of the selected personalities for training sharing his thoughts “There is something new in getting in to power boating and this would be a whole new experience for me. I personally favor any kind of racing so I am sure this will be a brilliant experience”. 

Mr. Lahiru Dhanitha another personality selected for training expressing his thoughts “From my younger days I always likes to get onto something with an engine so racing was my passion I would say plus this will be a whole new experience as this will be the first time I am racing on water”.
