Four days of intense boxing came to an end on the 31st of July 2013 at Sugathadasa Stadium crowning the winner from all over the island.
The intermediate boxing pugilists ranging from 19 years to 40 years have faced four days of intense hostility, to bring to light Sri Lanka’s future winners at the National Levels. The tournament came to an end picking the best of both male and female participants from over 156 players in total.
A main illustrative of the event was to follow the new code of conduct brought forward by the AIBA from March 2013. Also another add on to the event was the new scoring system. The finalists were well versed with the systems by the end of tournament providing them a strong hand to face upcoming Nationals. As per the program it can be noted, men’s rounds were three minutes each and consisted of three rounds. On the other hand women’s bouts were consisting of four rounds of two minutes each. Both genders were given an interval of one minute between each round. Taking up a notch ABA has given priority to the weigh-in and medical examinations to be conducted within the premises itself. They were held separately for men and women boxers between 8-10am on parallel days.
The finals of men’s rounds were held with the presence of Mr Wazir Soujah, a national champion and also the former secretary of the national boxing association of Sri Lanka for the year 2006, as the chief guest of the occasion. The competition between Air force, army, navy, Police and Linea boxers were tough and robust as expected. Summing up the women’s division, Air Force who won the most number of bouts, at the recently held Novices, faced MAS Southern BC, Police and Navy boxers to bring about much exciting overall gaming experience.
This year’s competition contained a high standard of Boxing. A large contingent has submitted applications from all the boxing clubs in the island. With the encouragement given to the sports in the country, it’s mostly notable that the majority of the participants are from outstation areas, particularly from Kandy and Horana. “In kandy boxing is more than a game, it’s a tradition descended for generations.” Commodore speaking to the ThePapare team explained. He added “We see this even at school level. The involvement from Colombo schools is less. I’d like to take this opportunity to remind that boxing is one of the safest contact games arts and bring to attention boxing needs to established within Colombo.”
Considering the 2013 Armature Boxing Association men’s and women’s intermediate boxing tournament below are the gold and silver medalists who qualified for the upcoming ABA Layton Cup, Clifford Cup and Nationals Championships.
