The Aba Men & Women Novices Boxing Meet – 2012

The Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo will see a host of boxers from Sri Lanka Air Force, Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy, Sri Lanka Police, Slimline, Unichela, Linea, Thurulie, MAS Southern, Silueta, Army Red, Kotalawela Defense University BC etc.

fighting for the “NOVICE” winner title in both Men’s and Women’s categories, during the 5th to 9th June 2012. The keen interest in the sport is apparent by the number of entries fielded this year. Therefore the meet has to be conducted for a duration of 5 days to accommodate all the entries, for the first time in the history of Boxing in Sri Lanka. There will be representation from all the weight classes as given below:

The competitions in these weight categories will be conducted according to the 2010 AIBA rules and regulations. The meet is open to young boxers who are between the ages of 17 and 34 years and have never won a “Novice”, “Intermediate”, “Open” or other national meet. 

Entries for this meet will be accepted until the 25th of May 2012, by the ABA. Winners will receive medals and certificates as well as being eligible to participate in open meets such as the Layton Cup, Clifford Cup and National Championships subsequent to their win.

The Referees and Judges Association of Sri Lanka will support this event with their 40 strong contingent of officials. They will require conducting a very stringent and timely contest every time to enable all bouts to complete within the 5 days of the meet. 

Last year in the Men’s weight categories, 3 weight classes were won by Slimline and Army. The Police and Army Red BC managed to win 2 weight classes each. Out of the Women’s Weight categories, 3 categories were won by MAS Southern BC, while Navy and Police won two women categories each and Linea Boxing Club won one category.
