The 72nd Battle of the Golds annual encounter played between Prince of Wales College and St. Sebastian’s College commenced today (27th October) at De Soysa Stadium in Moratuwa.
After a delayed start due to the rain, St. Sebastian’s College skipper Bihanga Mendis won the toss and invited Prince of Wales College to bat first.

The skipper Tharindu Amarasinghe and Rivith Jayasuriya opened the batting for Prince of Wales College and put on a 64-run partnership for the first wicket. However, No. 3 batter Omesh Mendis, the brother of Sri Lankan cricketer Kusal Mendis couldn’t stay long at the crease as he departed after making only 6 runs.
Amarasinghe continued to put misery on Sebastian bowlers scoring a brilliant half-century but after his dismissal, the Cambrians lost their way in the middle as they were restricted to just 149 runs.
After being 89/1 at one stage, Prince of Wales College lost the remaining 9 wickets for just 60 runs. Sandeesh Fernando was the chief wrecker with the ball for St. Sebastian’s College as he snared 4 wickets for 41 runs.

In reply, St. Sebastian’s College opening pair Savindu Rodrigo and Ryan Dissanayake got their team off to an excellent putting on a 63-run partnership for the first wicket, but similar to Cambrian’s innings their middle order collapsed losing 6 wickets for 57 runs.
At stumps on day one, St. Sebastian’s College were 120/6 trailing by 29 runs in the first innings with 4 wickets in hand.
