Sri Lankan athletes Tharushi Karunaratne and Aruna Dharshana triumphed on the opening day of the 2024 Taiwan Open Athletics.

Tharushi Karunaratne dominated the women’s 400m final at the Taiwan Open Athletics, clocking 52.48 seconds to set a new personal best and secure the gold medal. Nadeehsa Ramanayaka also impressed, finishing fourth in the same final with a strong time of 53.93 seconds.

In the meantime, Gayanthika Abeyrathne secured a silver medal in the women’s 1500m finals at the Taiwan Open Athletics, clocking an impressive 4 minutes and 24.66 seconds.

Sri Lanka continued its winning ways as Aruna Dharshana who started with a respectable time of 47.49 seconds in his men’s 400m heat, saved his best for the finals. He stormed to a dominant victory, clocking a blistering 45.82 seconds to claim the gold medal.

Day 2 of the Taiwan Open Athletics Championship promises to be another exciting day for Sri Lanka. After securing gold medals in their respective 400m finals, Aruna Dharshana and Tharushi Karunaratne are set to return to the track for the men’s 200m and women’s 800m events respectively. Nadeesha Lekamge will also be in action, aiming for Sri Lanka’s continued success in the competition.
