Tarinda Ratwatte to lead Sri Lanka 7’s outfit in Kathmandu

Tarinda Ratwatte has been selected to lead the Sri Lanka 7’s team that has been picked as they prepare to Represent the Island Nation at Kathmandu in the Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy. 

Tarinda Ratwatta will lead the team, which consists of five players from Kandy Sports Club, four from Police Sports Club, two from Army Sports Club, and one player each from Havelocks, CH & FC, Air Force, and Isipathana College. 

The headline pick is undoubtedly Shahid Zumri, as the youngster, who has just finished representing his school, finds himself in the Sri Lanka national team. 

The team will be aiming for success and hoping to replicate the achievement of the XV’s outfit, who managed to win on home soil. 

The Sri Lanka Squad consists of the following Players: 

Tarinda Ratwatte, Srinath Sooriabandara, Kavindu Perera, Heshan Jansen, Dilan Ekanayake (KSC), Akash Madushanka, Sachith Silva, Yomal Thilakarathne, Hirantha Perera (PSC), Sudaraka Dikkubura, Ashan Bandara (ASC), Dinupa Seneviratne (HSC), Janidu Dilshan (CH & FC), Dharshana Dabare (Air Force SC), Shahid Zumri (IC)  

Coach Nilfer Ibrahim has drafted in a strong squad as they prepare to go up against, Kazakthan, Qatar an Saudi Arabia, alongside Sri Lanka as they line up in Group C. 

  • Group A: Philippines, Pakistan, Jordan. 
  • Group B: Bahrain, Uzbekistan, Nepal 
  • Group C: Kazakthan, Qatar an Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka 
  • Group D: Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, Chinese Taipei 

The team will resume their training on Monday, the 30th of September, at Thurstan College Ground following the Mercantile 7’s tournament, which is taking place over the weekend of the 27th and 28th of September. 

The tournament is scheduled for the 4th and 5th of October in Kathmandu, Nepal, and the Sri Lanka team will depart the island on the 3rd of October 2024.
