Mohamed Sufaik’s brilliant goal with 21 minutes left gave Police SC an incredible 1-0 win over Super Sun SC in an end to end match, which lifted them from relegation, while dashing Super Sun’s Super 8 hopes at the Vernon Fernando Stadium, Kalutara.
The goal also crushed Java Lane’s hopes of staying up in the Champions League next season.
The first half saw both teams play with a high tempo and an often-heated exchange of words. It was clear this was going to be a tight game from the start with both teams keeping to their formation at all times and breaking forward from every loose ball.
Super Sun had some fine shots on goal within the first few minutes while also getting caught by the off side trap on numerous occasions. SL Police had equally played with passion and kept their formation at all times.
Half time – Super Sun 0 – 0 Police SC
A fine individual strike in the 69th minute from Mohamed Sufaik on the edge of the box, into the bottom left hand corner gave Police all three points in an end to end encounter.
Sufaik also picked up yellow card just minutes before for a deliberate hand ball in the attempt to force the ball into an open goal from a free kick.
Super Sun soon picked themselves up and made some fine shots on the goal. The best effort coming from Duodu Joseph after Police gave away a cheap free kick with a cynical foul. Duodu stepped up, aimed for the top left hand corner and was only denied a goal by the fingertips of goalkeeper Dumith Shashika.
In the last few minutes of the second half and well into injury time Super Sun were firmly dug in deep into Police territory. They had plenty of chance go begging and yet were not able to convert in the final execution. Sadly Police tried to delay the game often simulating injuries to the annoyance on the referee and the fans.
