Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini went down clutching his shoulder after an altercation with the Liverpool striker, who has twice been banned for biting an opponent in the past

Luis Suarez is again facing allegations of biting an opponent after Giorgio Chiellini went down clutching his shoulder following a coming together with the Liverpool star in Tuesday’s World Cup Group D clash between Uruguay and Italy.

The incident occurred in the second half of the game that saw Uruguay claim a 1-0 victory to put them through to the knockout stages of the competition, with Diego Godin’s winner earning second place in the group.

But the main talking point of the match will be Suarez’s altercation with Chiellini, with the Italian defender angered by the challenge, initially going down to the ground after contact from the Liverpool striker before approaching the referee and showing him visible marks on his shoulder.

It is not the first time that Suarez has been called into question over the alleged biting of an opponent, with the 26-year-old having previously been banned on two separate occasions for similar incidents.

The first, during his Ajax days back in 2010, saw Suarez bite Otman Bakkal’s shoulder which saw him receive a seven-game ban, while he was hit with a 10-game suspension for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during a Premier League game in April 2013.

Suarez has been linked with La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid and Barcelona in recent weeks, with former Barca star Gabri suggesting that the Uruguay forward, who won the PFA and FWA Player of the Year for his performances last season, has always wanted to sign for the Catalan club.
