Action from the JOES v POW quarter-final at Darley Road

The quarter final round of the Singer U15 Division 1 Cricket Tournament kicked off today as St. Joseph’s College, Colombo and Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa faced each other at Darley Road while Mahanama College, Colombo played St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa at Kotte. The quarter finals are played as two-day games with tomorrow being the second day.

Mahanama elected to bowl first after winning the toss and the decision seemed wise as St. Sebastian’s didn’t have the best of starts. Skipper Shanel Fernando joined Nadeera Fernando in the middle and the two not only managed to dig their team out of trouble but also shifted the momentum with a fine partnership. Nadeera’s brilliant knock of 103 and Shanel’s 56 were the highlights of the day as the Sebastian-ites were eyeing a big total.

Mahanama managed to pull the things back slightly as they got the final few wickets in quick succession. St. Sebastian’s were finally bowled out for 265 in 72.2 overs. Pawan Senal got 3 wickets for 52 runs and Nethmina Ranasinghe ended up with the figures of 2 for 29. In reply Mahanama got to 65 for the loss of 2 wickets as play was called off for the day.

Prince of Wales won the toss at Darley Road and invited St. Joseph’s College to bat first. The Josephians started with positive intent and looked to score at a good pace but the Prince of Wales’ bowlers picked up wickets at regular intervals to keep the batsmen in check. St. Joseph’s had to settle with a total of 151 as they were bowled out in 43.3 overs. Lakshan Gamage managed to score 33 with the bat and Neluka Fernando was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 4 wickets for 37 runs.

The Moratuwa boys were not at their best with the bat as they too lost wickets at regular intervals and ended up with 122 for 6 at stumps. Lakshan again starred for the Joes, this time with the ball as he picked up 2 wickets for 24 runs. Skipper Kaveen Chathushka top scored for Prince of Wales with 28.
